Things You Need to Know about God’s Wrath
God’s love and peace are greatly loved, while His wrath is truly hated. The subject of the wrath of God toward sin and sinners is crystal clearly and widely taught in the Bible, whether people want to hear it or not. This TRUTH is so interwoven with love of God and the hope of our peace with one another and with God that if we lose our grip on one, we lose our hope of the other.
Things You Need to Know about God’s Wrath
The wrath of God is His steady, unrelenting, unremitting, uncompromising hatred to evil in ALL its forms and displays.
#1. God’s wrath is not like our anger. Everything we know about God: He is good, He is just, He is love and He is merciful, must be added when we consider His wrath. Our anger can often be unbalanced, unpredictable and petty, but none of these are true about the anger of God. God’s wrath is always the fair and measured response of His Holiness toward evil.
#2. God’s wrath is provoked. The anger of God is NOT something that is present within Him by nature. It is His reaction to the evil He cannot tolerate. It is provoked by our sin. God’s wrath is different, His Holy wrath is His answer to the intrusion of filthy, wickedness into His good, clean world. If there were no sin in the world, there would be NO wrath found in God. God’s anger is His unchanging decision that evil will NOT stand.
#3. God is slow to anger. Why does God allow evil to continue in the world? Why doesn’t He just wipe it out? I truly believe it is because of His love for mankind. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (KJV) God wants NO one to go to Hell, so He holds out the offer of grace and forgiveness in Christ Jesus. People are coming to Him in faith and repentance every day, and God patiently holds open the door of grace for them.
#4. God’s wrath is revealed now. God reveals His wrath when sinners refuse to believe the Truth about Him, exchanging the Truth for a demonic lie, and worship created things rather than the Creator? God gives them up (Romans 1). Therefore, God gave them up to the lusts of their hearts to impurity (1:24). For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions (1:26). God gave them over up to a corrupted mind (1:28).
#5. God’s wrath is stored up. The end result of the Bible story leads to a day when God will deal with all wickedness finally, fully and forever. This will be the future day of wrath, when God will make payment on every evil and bring to judgment every sin. God will do this in perfect justice. The punishment for each and every sin will perfectly match the crime (Rev.20:11-15). When the judgment is done, every mouth will be stopped because everyone will know that God judged in righteousness and justice. Then God will usher in a new Heaven and a new Earth, which will be the home of righteousness.
#6. God’s wrath is on sinners. John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
That wrath is already there. WHY is it already there? By nature, we all are children of wrath (Eph.2:3). It is the state in which we were born, handed down to us by Adam. The greatest human problem is that we ALL are sinners (Rom.3:23), every one of us, and are under the judgment of God, and God’s divine wrath hangs over us unless or until it is taken away.
How God’s Wrath Is Removed
The Bible speaks about God’s wrath being poured out at the cross: Eze. 7:8 Now will I shortly pour out my fury upon thee, and accomplish mine anger upon thee: and I will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense thee for all thine abominations. (KJV) This was written for Israel, but it also goes for us. This is the heart of what happened at the cross: The Father’s divine wrath toward sin was poured out on Jesus. He became the propitiation for our sins (Rom.3:25), which means that the payment for our sins was poured out on Jesus at the cross of Calvary. Christ died for you because both He and the Father loves you. God loved you even when you were the object of His wrath! The outpouring of God’s wrath was the greatest act of love this world has ever seen. We can never run away from God’s wrath or judgment.
The hope for sinners is that between us and the wrath of God stands the cross of Jesus. Sin was laid on Jesus and the Divine wrath toward it was poured out, spent and drained in the darkness of Calvary. And when it was done, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “It is finished!”
Christ Jesus died, but He rose from the dead, He lives! He is alive, and He stands before us today, a Living Saviour! He offers to you the priceless gift (Rom. 6:23; Eph.2:8) of peace with God. He is ready to forgive your sins and fill you with His Spirit. He is able to save you from the wrath and reconcile you to the Father. He has opened the door of Heaven, and only He is able to bring you in. John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)
