"Damnable Heresies"

Spiritual Gifts?? Then and Now!!

2 Peter 2:1-3 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. (KJV)

Spiritual gifts given to us by God through His Holy Spirit CANNOT be bought as Simon found out. They are a GIFT and they are given by God,to whomever He chooses. Acts 8:18-20 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, 19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. (KJV) . . . "Thy money perish with thee" means: "Accursed be thou and thy money with thee." This is a formal curse, not only on his money, but also upon Simon himself.

Romans 12:4-6 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; (KJV) . . .
Ephesians 4:11-16 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: 16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (KJV) . . . God has chosen people to do His work in this world. Only He knows and understands why He did this. Sometimes we may wonder if this was the best decision. He could have chosen to use angels to speak to lost humanity. He certainly used them on many occasions throughout Scripture. Or God could have created special messengers that would never fail him . . . a "sin-proof" "messenger". . . unlike sinful humanity, that would faithfully proclaim His Word. BUT . . . God has chosen men and women to do His work among humankind.

As we strive to follow and be used by Christ Jesus, we need to make use of all that He has made available to us. A tremendous blessing Jesus has given to His church and to us as individuals is the gifts of the Spirit. Why has He given these gifts? The Bible tells us they play a vital role in the lives of TRUE believers.

Spiritual Gifts Enable Us to Grow in Christ.

Many people get sidetracked with spiritual gifts, becoming more obsessed with the gifts than with Jesus. That is such a drastic mistake. This is a sign of spiritual immaturity. The Christian writer/preacher A. B. Simpson wrote these insightful words:

Once it was the blessing, now it is the Lord. Once it was the feeling, now it is his Word.
Once his gifts I wanted, now the Giver own. Once I sought for healing, now himself alone.

Attaining spiritual gifts is NOT the goal of a "Christian." They are simply the gateway to our learning more about Jesus, and our being able to edify the church. They are absolutely NOT something to make us "feel a high" or make us be noticed in the congregation! And they certainly are NOT to be used to confuse congregations! They are NOT ever to be used in the lust of money as some of these false prophets do. SHAME on these heretics! They are NOT not a hobby to play with . . . they are TOOLS with which to build and weapons with which to fight! They are instruments that TRUE Christians use to honor and glorify God! They are NEVER to be used to benefit us in our glorying of ourselves, ever!

Spiritual Gifts are given to us by God and they are to be USED! And I mean used in the PROPER manner! If you are born again into the family of God, you have a spiritual gift of some sort. In my humble opinion, there are literally hundreds of gifts that the Holy Spirit can give to a person. I knew mine very shortly after I was saved. It was teaching His Word. And when I found out what it was, I was terrified, because the little church was in the Bible Belt, and the people there grew up on God's Word. And God arranged it so that I was to be the Sunday School teacher to the elderly. Yes, I was scared! But when God gives a person a job, He does equip them to do it. Years later, when He started giving me His poems, I thought I was going batty! I did not even like poetry, and when the words started running around in my head, I was very confused to say the least. But, those poems were equipping me for a bigger job, a prison ministry.

You have a spiritual gift if you are God's child. Whatever it is . . . USE it! Do not be ashamed when He comes and try to make excuses for why you did not use your gift. And NEVER be envious of someone else's gift. God gave you a gift that He wants you to have.

Each Spiritual Gift Has a Special Place in the Body of Christ. Every gift that God has placed in the body of Christ, the church, is important. Some gifts such as preaching, teaching, and prophesying may SEEM more important than others such as hospitality or service. But God has given all of these gifts to build up His church. NONE of God's gifts should be looked down upon or treated lightly.

Permanent Sp[iritual Gifts

#1. Teaching #2. Helps (Ministering) #3. Administration #4. Evangelism #5. Pastor-Teacher #6. Exhortation #7. Giving #8. Mercy #9. Faith.

Temporary Spiritual Gifts

#1. Apostleship . . . the requirement was they had to be an eye witness to the resurrection of Jesus. There are NO apostles today! #2. Prophecy . . . was things that would happen in the future, given to chosen men by God, to give to Israel. #3. Miracles . . . was the ability to do supernatural works. Miracles were always done by Jesus or an apostle in the New Testament. #4. Healing . . . The gift of healing varied from miracles. It was limited because healings had to do with restoring the physical body. #5.Discerning Spirits . . . This gift separated false messengers from the real messengers of God until the complete revelation of the Word was finished. Once the Bible was finished this gift was no longer needed. #6. Word of Wisdom . . . this gift was the supernatural ability to discern and apply the Word of God. #7. Word of Knowledge . . . (1 Cor. 12:8). That supernatural knowledge would pass away (1 Cor.13:8). #8. Tongues . . . this means LANGUAGES! It does NOT mean the ridiculous jibber-jabber in today's Charismatic churches! The gift of tongues was a supernatural ability to speak an earthly foreign language without special training. This gift is NOT for today! #9. Interpreting Tongues . . . the gift of interpreting tongues was the supernatural ability to understand a foreign language without special training, and then to communicate the message to other believers.

Tongues Was One of the Sign Gifts

The sign gifts were temporary gifts to validate the ministry of the apostles (2 Cor. 12:12). Tongues are specifically called a sign in 1 Corinthians 14:22.

The Gift of Tongues Is not Present Today

What about the ecstatic speech that is a common phenomenon today? Speaking in tongues as it is practiced today is absolutely NOT Biblical tongues. Remember that Biblical tongues refers to foreign languages. The babblings of today have their origin in the mystery cults of ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, and it was practiced by unbelievers. It is my personal velief that modern day "tongues" is a damnable heresy!
